Transmission:

  • Virus can infect through eyes, nose, and mouth, via droplets produced on coughing or sneezing.
  • Close contact with infected persons increases the risk of contagion (minimum 1 meter, as recommended by the WHO).
  • Contact with contaminated surfaces, objects, or items of personal use. (varying information here, but some studies suggest the virus may live on surfaces up to 9 days).
  • Even if someone doesn't have symptoms, they may still have and transmit the disease.

Symptoms


  • Coronavirus causes symptoms like fever, cough, shortness of breath.
  • Symptoms can be almost similar to common cold or flu and may appear 2-14 days of exposure.
  • Severity of illness can vary in different people from mild to severe symptoms (older people, or people with health problems like diabetes, heart disease and respiratory problems are more than twice as likely to need medical attention).

What to do if you are infected

  • Don't panic, inform yourself!
  • Stay home from work, school, and away from other public places. If you must go out, avoid using any kind of public transportation, ridesharing, or taxis.
  • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people in or outside of the home, wear a facemask.
  • Avoid sharing personal items with other people in your household, like dishes, towels, and bedding.
  • Clean all surfaces that are touched often, like counters, tabletops, and doorknobs. Use household cleaning sprays or wipes according to the label instructions.
  • Stay warm and get plenty of rest.
  • Maintain healthy diet, and particularly ensuring hydration by drinking lots of water!
  • Steam inhalation 2-3 times per day may help with breathing.
  • Monitor your symptoms carefully. If your symptoms get worse, call your healthcare provider immediately.
  • Some evidence that fresh air and sun can be helpful while recovering.
  • If you have a medical appointment, call the healthcare provider ahead of time and tell them that you have or may have COVID-19.
  • For medical emergencies, call your local emergency number and notify the dispatch personnel that you have or may have COVID-19.
